Not Til I Have Done: A Personal Testimony
Published in Hardcover by Westminster John Knox Press (May, 1999)
Author: Elizabeth Achtemeier
Average review score:

A gem of a book
This is a marvelous volume, full of love for her Lord, love for her family, and for her fellow man.

I am preparing to give copies of this book to two people, which is the heartiest recommendation I can think to make.

I am sorry to report that Dr. Achtemeier passed away recently. My wife and I have been blessed to hear her husband, Dr. Paul Achtemeier, teach on the New Testament several times. I would have loved to hear her speak.

Highly recommended.

the heart of a scholar ...
In this brief but full autobiography, Elizabeth Achtemeier brings us full circle from her Oklahoma childhood, her theological education in New York and Germany, her years as wife and mother, and her unplanned vocation in teaching homiletics at a time when women were just beginning to enter the pulpit. Her prose is sharp, witty, but gentle too. Throughout this book, her theme is God's hand on her life, in joys and frustrations.

I especially enjoyed reading how she and her husband met and how their scholarship has complimented, rather than competed against, one another. I also think it is so important for retiring scholars to write such personal accounts, sharing with those who have admired their intellectual prose the humanity from which it stems. It is clear God is "not done" with her yet, noe with any who seek His voice.

Notes of Conversations With the Duke of Wellington: 1831-1851 (Lost Treasures Series)
Published in Paperback by Prion Books (August, 1998)
Authors: Earl Stanhope and Elizabeth Longford
Average review score:

Superb Quote book
Excellent work that provides plenty of quotes from Wellington.
This book gives the reader a picture of the man that augments even the best biographies.
Worth the time and money.

Fascinating conversations from a time long past
The conversations young Lord Mahon (later Earl Stanhope) recorded for posterity with the Duke of Wellington are certainly valuable on more than an historic note. These pages give a unique insight into the character of Wellington, illuminating his sense of duty to England and also his refreshing sense of humor. For a man who was known for his reserve and reticence, this book shows him to be quite open and frank on nearly all topics. The last years of the Duke's life are especially moving as Lord Mahon describes in detail the various illnesses that afflict the old warrior's body but never seem to overtake his mind. Anyone interested in the events of the last century and particularly the period of the Napoleonic Wars will enjoy this book. Wellington certainly ranks as one of the foremost figures of that era.

Nursing Diagnosis & Intervention: Planning for Patient Care
Published in Paperback by Mosby (15 January, 1997)
Authors: Gertrude K. McFarland and Elizabeth A. McFarlane
Average review score:

Helpful Resource
I own the 1993 (second edition) and have found it to be invaluable in teaching beginning students about the nursing process. I especially like the inclusion of historical information, use of functional health patterns, and summary of the nursing process itself. The definition of each diagnosis and overview statements provide good background information. The case studies and care plans are excellent learning tools. References cited after each diagnosis provide additional resources and rationales.
The addition of NIC and NOC and evidence-based information in the new edition along with updated diagnoses would make this book a valuable addition to any nurse's reference library.

the best Nursing Books
i'm very interest about it, because i work in Hospital Thank's

Nutrition for Women: The Complete Guide
Published in Paperback by Henry Holt & Company, Inc. (January, 1995)
Author: Elizabeth Somer
Average review score:

A great resource for healthy women.
This book contains a ton of information, but it is still highly readable. Even if you don't want to read the whole thing straight through, it's a good resource for looking up specific topics. It even covers vitamin supplements, and the emphasis is NOT on weight-loss, which I found refreshing (though it touches on that too.)

Overall, I'd say it's a good book to have on hand for any woman who cares about her health, not just the latest fad diet. And even for those who do like to dabble with strange diets, but still wish to know the facts and protect themselves.

comprehensive, educational nutrition book for women
This book is very practical and handy. I have checked it out from the library several times and finally decided to buy it! It covers in depth, what every woman should know about her own health and nutrition. Smart and Sensible. Easy to read and understand.

One Art
Published in Hardcover by Farrar Straus & Giroux (April, 1994)
Authors: Elizabeth Bishop and Robert Giroux
Average review score:

I Fell In Love With Elizabeth Bishop All Over Again!
In this amazing collection of Elizabeth Bishop's selected letters, all of the various nuances of her most personal voice --warm, intimate, keenly observant, whimsical and humorous, generous, shy, gutwrenchingly honest, decorous and demure -- come through with astonishing human clarity. Bishop's engaging and elegant epistolary style makes reading One Art almost like reading an epistolary novel. The collection certainly functions as a fascinatingly candid biography of the somewhat shy and elusive Bishop, and also provides marvelous glimpses of both her writing processes, and the contextual background against which many of her poems emerged. Mostly, though, I found myself liking Elizabeth Bishop to excess . . . her humor, her eye for detail, her weirdly shy and modest charisma, even her flaws . . . and wishing that I could have been one of her inner circle of friends receiving these wonderful letters.

Revelations of the Artist
These letters provide a fascinating insight into the poet, who was as compelling in prose as in poetry. I love Bishop's work, and I am enjoying this book!

Ophelia's Salvation
Published in Paperback by Xlibris Corporation (25 September, 2000)
Author: Mary Elizabeth Borsellino
Average review score:

Stunning
It's the sort of book that you never want to end, and the sort of book that refuses to slot neatly into any category. Love story? Yes, that's there. Coming-of-age tale? That too. Ethical and moral debate? Yes. A story about life, death, desperation, making choices, family, love, pain, joy, and truth? It's all there.

Apart from all that, it's a fabulous read, with unique characters so well-developed you'll feel that you've known them since childhood, and twists in the tale that will literally prevent you from putting the book down for even a moment. It's in parts almost epic, and in other parts a simple fable. I leave you with two words of advice - read it.

The Whole Story Is Long and Complicated
Anyone who's ever had a hard time growing up will find themselves identifying with the main character, Amy, in 'Ophelia's Salvation'. It's so much more then a coming-of-age novel though. It's about going on the adventure that makes you value life, finding out who you are, and who you love. It's about standing up for what you believe in, and finding your own Faith Wotton, or Grace-Rose, or Magdellin, and when you find them realizing that you'll never be the same again. 'Ophelia's Salvation' is drowning in life, and loving every moment of it.

Oranges on Golden Mountain
Published in Hardcover by Dutton Books (January, 2001)
Authors: Elizabeth Partridge, Aki Sogabe, and Donna L. Brooks
Average review score:

A beautifully illustrated immigrant story
"Oranges on Golden Mountain" is an excellent children's book. The text by Elizabeth Partridge is complemented by Aki Sogabe's colorful illustrations.

"Oranges" tells the story of Jo Lee, a Chinese boy who emigrates to California, where he works as a fisherman with his uncle. He misses his mother, who is still in China, but he plants orange branches that she gave him to take on his journey.

This is a realistic immigrant story with some fantastic/supernatural touches that evoke traditional Chinese beliefs. Illustrator Aki Sogabe creates many memorable scenes: a letter writer engaged in Chinese calligraphy, the Dragon King flying over a stormy ocean, Jo Lee tending his orange saplings, and more. To sum up: this is an excellent book for children of all cultures.

A wonderful Chinese immigrant tale.
Jo Lee has to leave China because his family orchard can not support everyone after two dry years in a row. Mother uses the last of the money Father sent to get Jo Lee to Fourth Uncle in California. She knows he will have food there and learn to fish. Jo Lee's comfort is that he can send his Hun, his dream spirit, to keep in touch with his family in China. He leaves his family orchard for California with the bundle of orange tree twigs his mother gives to him. When he reaches Golden Mountain, Fourth Uncle helps him plant the twigs.

When the orange twigs root and bloom, Jo Lee's hope bloom too. Then, when he sleeps, his Hun travels to China to tell his mother. A heart-tugging story of the sacrifice made by a Chinese boy to help his family during hard times.

The cut paper drawings, by illustrator Aki Sogabe, beautifully compliment this story. The white caps, the swirling water, the fishing net, the misty Hun, and the clouds are superb illustrations for this simple little story.

Out of Many: A History of the American People
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall College Div (June, 1999)
Authors: John MacK Faragher, Mari Jo Buhle, Daniel Czitrom, Susan H. Armitage, and Elizabeth Neumeyer
Average review score:

Excellent American History Resource
History textbooks are usually inadequate and painfully boring. This book is exceptionally well-written, accurate and interesting. It's great!

This book is awesome.
I am a secondary education history major and I use this book in my US history class. I find it to be simply outstanding. It reads like a novel and not like a text book. This is a must have for any history buff.
